Total Commander SSL feature

Total Commander program users who want to connect to various servers and want a secureFTP connection can use SSL (Secure Socket Layer). SSL (Secure Socket Layer) is a Web protocol developed by Netscape that allow transmission of private documents safely on the Internet. SSL data encryption use a cryptographic protocol with two keys - one public and one private key known only by the recipient of the message.

OpenSSl option in Total Commander

Users who attempt to connect via FTP client application Total Commander, using the SSL/TLS feature will usually receive the following error message:

OpenSSL library not found!

Just to save some searches: Want to use SSL feature in FTP client of Total Commander you must have in same directory with Total Commander  two SSL dlls.

Christian Ghisler made public the method and reasons:

Here is some information on how to use the ssl/tls feature. Because of the Swiss crypto export laws, I cannot include the openssl dlls in the install package.

1. Get the compiled OpenSSL package from the LibCurl library:
http://curl.haxx.se/download.html
Please scroll down to the section named “Win32 — Generic“
and download the following package (or a newer one):
Win32 2000/XP 7.19.0 libcurl SSL enabled Günter Knauf 1.54 MB

2. Copy the two dlls libssl32.dll and libeay32.dll from the “bin” subdir of the archive to the Total Commander directory.
3. Now you can make connections with prefix ftps:// and https://

There will appear a red open locker for connections because the root certificates are missing. To get the root certificates of Verisign, Thawte etc, do the following:
1. Start Internet Explorer and open its configuration dialog
2. Go to the page “Content“
3. Click on “Certificates“
4. Go to the last page “Trusted root certificate authorities“
5. Select all certificates
6. Click on“Export“
7. As name, enter: rootcerts
8. Confirm with Next/OK. This creates a file rootcerts.p7b
9. Issue the following two commands to convert to openssl format:

openssl pkcs7 –inform DER –in rootcerts.p7b –print_certs –out unfiltered.pem
openssl x509 –in unfiltered.pem –out rootcert.pem

10. Put the file rootcert.pem in the Total Commander directory

This is from oficial forum, but first, check if your host allows SSL connections because there are many hosts that do not allow FTP connections through SSL.

Backify and Beecloud– 512GB free online storage

Backify and BeeCloud- newcomers in cloud backup market offer 512GB of free online backup storage and similar services. Compared with competitors like Dropbox and Mozy  - 2GB for free, OpenDrive,  SugarSync and Box have a 5GB free account, Apple announced its 5GB free iCloudMicrosoft SkyDrive was biggest free service with 25GB. So how anyone can give 20 times that space, free of charge?

BeeCloud is in fact Livedrive for resellers offer which have unlimited backup and custom branding for just $59.95 per month. BeeCloud does state that they are resellers of Livedrive, but not Backify. (At least I haven’t found it) Services are similar: register, download client Windows or Mac and  upload files to your account.

In Backify TOS is a little statement that can make people think again:
“By using the facilities of the Backify Services to make Content available to other Users (“Shared Content”):you grant to Backify a limited license to use, modify, publicly perform, publicly display, reproduce, and distribute your Shared Content on and through the Backify Services. The license you grant to Backify is non-exclusive, perpetual, fully-paid and royalty-free, sub-licensable, and worldwide;you represent and warrant that you own the Shared Content or otherwise have the right to grant the license set forth in this section;”
